No, I’m not pre-ordering an iPad

It might have been obvious from my earlier posts, but I won’t be jumping on the iPad bandwagon just yet.
So far I have only one reason to buy, and that’s to stay ahead of the curve professionally. I’m sure there will be all sorts of incremental bells and whistles that I will have to account for when I’m creating integrated marketing campaigns. There’s been talk of a camera now being included, but that’s like announcing the car now comes with seatbelts.
It might be the coolest thing since sliced laptops once they get the apps rolling. Apple might have created a mission control for my life, an iGoogle meets Newsmap-like immersive portable dashboard. It also might be the next Newton.
I just can’t justify shelling out hundreds of dollars for something I hope will be a game-changer. Right now it’s a giant iPhone that can’t call people. Change the game first, then I’ll buy.
p.s. In case you haven’t seen Newsmap, check it out. It’s headed toward my dream dashboard. But I want everything, not just news:

Hi Max,
I think its important to stay in touch with where your auidence is going, if its blogging, twitter or the iPad, then its really important to think about how those technologies will influence your business and your client’s business. So for me, I look at the iPad strategically, and really research whether our audience and our client’s audiences will be using the technology.

It’ll be interesting to see how it goes. I know it’s a little chicken and the egg, but before I see any apps, I can’t really tell who is going to buy it. So far it feels like a novelty item.
The apps are available on the iPhone store. It’s compatible.
Haha! No I know, I know. I mean apps that leverage the platform specifically, not things like that giant-buttoned Facebook interface they were touting at the release. Even the New York Times app was a barely-changed version of their AIR app.
Have you seen/heard anything on the app front that has made you really excited yet? A friend of mine is working on the new iPad NPR app, which shows some promise…
